The Soul is the lifeforce of a living being, comprised of a mass of Manna. It can be extracted or injected using magic.

Appearance

Souls resemble a floating sphere of manna. When an organism dies in a manner that extracts their soul, manna will pool out of their body, assemble into a soul, and float up. Souls can also form into the shape of their original host, as was the unique case with Spellbinder.[1]

Magic users can astral-project their soul. In Gwen's case, due to her heritage, her soul is depicted as her Anodite form.[2]

Functions

The soul of an organism provides them with consciousness and thought. When extracted, the body is not damaged, and simply goes completely limp. Beings who have subsequently been resurrected can sense to a certain degree that their soul has been extracted.[1]

Through the use of magic, living beings are able to manipulate souls. Souls can be extracted by spells, some of which via talismans like the Staff of Ages or the Alpha Rune; they can be stored within machines such as the Sorcerer's Engine; and they can be moved and restored to their host bodies by a spell or by powerful beings such as Dagon.[1]

Through one particular forbidden ritual, "the darkest of dark magic",[3] a gigantic offering of souls can be traded with the "old one" of Legerdomain and exchanged with the soul of an already deceased person, materializing a physical body for them as well.[1]

Another method of instead controlling one's own soul is astral projection, where a magic user is able to send their soul out, leaving their physical body behind in a trance-like state. This allows them to access locations or scales of reality they otherwise cannot.[2]

History

Ultimate Alien

In The Ultimate Sacrifice, Gwen astral-projects her soul into the Ultimatrix in order to go rescue Ben after being warped inside. While there, she could perform Manna attacks as normal, and Ben further remarked that if she stayed like this for too long, like with her Anodite form, her Human body would be destroyed.

In Enemy of My Frenemy, Charmcaster built the Sorcerer's Engine to congregate the souls of 600,000 beings within Legerdomain, including Addwaitya and the trio. She bargained this with Dagon as a trade for returning her father to life. Dagon accepted, ressurecting Spellbinder as agreed. After all the souls were sent through the crack in the sky through which Dagon communicated, one single soul was sent floating down. It landed in front of Charmcaster, fully materializing into Spellbinder. However, when Spellbinder learned of his daughter's actions, he was horrified, and rescinded the deal. His body became a soul again and flew back up. As is the way of magic, Dagon returned the 600,000 souls, reviving all those who had been killed by Charmcaster.
